Acadias CNS Pipeline Propels Growth

About a month ago, Acadia Pharmaceuticals' (www.acadiapharm.com) value more than doubled in a matter of days. On March 19, the day it reported positive results for its Phase II schizophrenia co-therapy trial, shares soared 86% to $12.49. Since then, Acadia has maintained a price between $12 and $17. For this reason, Zacks senior pharmaceuticals analyst Jason Napodano has a buy rating on the company.

Acadia is a biopharmaceutical firm with a focus on disorders of the central nervous system. There are five programs in clinical evaluation. The most advanced of these is the Phase III development of ACP-103 for Parkinson's disease psychosis.

Acadia believes that its schizophrenia candidates are poised to address the positive and negative symptoms of the disease more completely and with fewer side effects.

GOP Buries Head in Sand and Discovers Sand

Every political party has its strengths and weaknesses. The Democratic Party, for instance, is built on forward-looking issues focused on nurturing individuals, while at the same time being so contentious it occasionally eats its young.

The Independent Party pursues an agenda of broad fair-mindedness balanced by a total absence of rational organization. The Green Party develops ennobling principles for all Mankind, combined with a myopia that ignores known reality.

Positive Results Prompt US National Cancer Institute To Make ...

Investigators will begin offering Gleevec(R) (imatinib mesylate) tablets to patients receiving placebo in a major North American clinical trial after an interim analysis showed participants with Kit-positive gastrointestinal stromal tumors treated with Gleevec following surgery were significantly less likely to experience a return of their cancer compared to those not taking this innovative therapy.

The interim analysis showed no recurrence of cancer in approximately 97% of patients given Gleevec for a year after surgery to remove tumors, compared to approximately 83% of those who underwent surgery but received a placebo. The investigators made these results public because the study had met its primary endpoint in terms of rate of recurrence-free survival.

The study involving more than 600 patients was sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the US National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Smoking doubles eye disorder risk in old age

ISLAMABAD: People who smoke have double the risk of suffering from a degenerative eye disorder that is the leading cause of blindness in the elderly, researchers said on Thursday. A study of more than 4,000 Britons aged 75 years and older showed that those who smoke were twice as likely to have age related macular degeneration (AMD) as those who didn't. "Smoking is associated with a twofold increased risk of developing AMD," said Professor Astrid Fletcher, of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, in a study published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology. AMD is an illness that blurs the central vision. It affects the macula, or part of the eye that sees fine detail. In the United States alone it afflicts about 10 million to 15 million people. The risk of suffering from the illness increases with age.

Slight Medicare boost helps rural hospitals survive, grow

If you'd rather be alone when you're sick, Paris Community Hospital can now accommodate you with its all new single-patient rooms that came with an $11 million remodeling job.

New construction also has been going on at the hospital in Gibson City, where a $7 million emergency department just opened.
