DAPAC Gives OK to Downtown Proposals

DAPAC members finally adopted recommendations for developing UC Berkeley-owned property in downtown Berkeley Wednesday, but it took more than three hours, and one key element remains to be decided.

The marathon session of the Downtown Area Plan Advisory Committee didn't deal with the second major item on their agenda—adoption of the sustainabilty element, the cornerstone of the new downtown plan they're formulating.

Chair Will Travis began the meeting with an announcement that the city had defeated the lawsuit challenging the court settlement that provided for the creation of the new downtown plan DAPAC is formulating.

“We can move forward with total confidence that we are a legitimate body," he said.

When one committee member expressed doubt, Travis said, “There are still people who don't believe in global warming and even Galileo had trouble convincing everybody."

While an Alameda County Superior Court judge decided against the litigation filed by activists including Anne Wagley, Berkeley Daily Planet arts and entertainment editor, attorney Stephan Volker said he will appeal on behalf of his clients.

Car wash to help families of crash victims

A group of parents and teachers at John Cabrillo Preschool will hold a fundraiser this weekend for relatives of the three women and toddler killed Monday by a suspected drunken driver. The victims were on their way to pick up the baby's brother at the school when they were fatally struck.

Volunteers will wash cars Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the school, 1141 Seamas Ave. in South Land Park, around the corner from where the accident occurred.

Donations of any amount will be accepted to help the family of Brizchelle Rice, 21; Shanice Carter, 18; Brittanya Nash, 17; and Kamall Dino Savant Osby, 19 months old.

Good outcomes found with macular hole surgery in limited, non ...

Most patients treated with modern macular hole repair performed in the limited, non-supine position achieved good anatomical and visual outcomes after a single surgery, researchers in Canada found.

Andrew B. Merkur, MD, of the University of Ottawa Eye Institute, and colleague Raman Tuli, MD, reviewed outcomes for 72 eyes with idiopathic macular holes. This included 60 patients with a grade 3 hole, six patients with a grade 2 hole and six patients with a grade 4 hole.

Dr. Tuli performed all surgeries with patients in the limited, non-supine position, eliminating the need for facedown positioning, according to the study.

Best corrected visual acuity averaged 20/170 preoperatively and increased to 20/46 after surgery. Overall, 92% of patients achieved anatomical success after a single surgery.

Renee Richards pens 2nd autobiography

Looking back on 32 years as a woman, Dr. Renee Richards has become comfortable talking about the transsexual surgery that gave her international notoriety and set her, at times, on an emotional roller coaster.

"I've scaled many barriers - in medicine, on the tennis court and in the world," she said, walking in the terraced entranceway of her 1930s-era stone cottage that overlooks Boyd Corners Reservoir. She is flanked by her two large dogs - Travis, an Airedale terrier, and Midget, a Burmese mountain dog. A tabby cat scurries about, not stopping for an introduction.

Richards has just written her second autobiography, "No Way Renee," with co-author John Ames, in which she talks about her 40-year career as an eye surgeon and her time as a professional tennis champion and coach to Martina Navratilova.
