Surgical nurse helps out in Haiti
KINGMAN - Registered nurse Leslie Martin temporarily left the relatively sterile environment of the surgery department at Kingman Regional Medical Center in February to visit a region where health care is sporadic at best. Martin was part of a 20-member team that traveled to Haiti. Dr. Kenneth Westfield, an ophthalmologist who formerly practiced at Mohave Eye Center, headed the team comprised of nurses, technicians, ophthalmologists and translators. Friends of the Children of Lascahobas sponsored the Feb. 8-17 trip. "It's an organization based in New York that was founded by a Haitian woman who grew up there and wanted to help her people," Martin said. After arriving by plane in the capital of Port Au Prince, the team boarded a bus for a four-hour ride to the village of Lascahobas about 40 miles away.
