| LASIK eye surgery: Is it the right choice for you?
Tired of the daily hassle of putting in contacts or wearing glasses? There are many types of procedures to choose from when wanting to improve your vision. The most popular is LASIK eye surgery, which is beneficial because of the minimal amount of pain or discomfort most patients experience. Most people suffering with poor eye vision want immediate results. LASIK can be considered a "quick fix" surgery; improved vision can occur the very next day. The actual procedure only takes about five minutes and both nearsighted and farsighted people can benefit from this procedure. There is no reason to be scared of pain because special drops anesthetize your eyes. A type of retainer is used to keep the eyelid open, making it easy for the surgeon to work. During the procedure, the doctor uses an instrument called microkeratome to create a thin line on the cornea in order to fold that flap back.
Jail for brutal bashing
TWO Ipswich brothers ignored a man begging for mercy as they smashed almost every bone in his face while his hysterical 10-year-old son looked on screaming. The Ipswich District Court was told yesterday that at one stage the men spoke of killing their victim and the boy became so distressed he wet his pants. The court was told Lesley and Andras Bognar went to a Springfield Lakes home, west of Brisbane, on the evening of December 8, 2005, under the wrong impression the home's owner had been intimate with one of their estranged wives. After smashing a window and kicking in a security door, the court was told the men attacked the house owner, a former friend, over the perceived sexual indiscretion. The house owner escaped and the pair turned on the man and his son who were unsuspecting house guests.
Study: Half of US adults at high risk for vision loss not ...
Of an estimated 61 million Americans at increased risk for vision loss, only slightly more than half received a dilated eye exam within the past 12 months, a study found. In addition, one in 12 people at high risk for vision loss could not afford eye glasses when needed, the study authors noted. "Better targeting of resources and efforts toward people at high risk may help reduce these disparities," they said. Xinzhi Zhang, MD, PhD, of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and colleagues used data from the 2002 National Health Interview Survey to estimate the number of U.S. adults at risk for vision loss as well as factors associated with eye care services use. The survey included a nationally representative sample of more than 30,000 people age 18 years and older, according to the study.

Baton Rouge firm out on the cutting edge
In 2006, doctors performed around 11 million cosmetic surgical procedures in the United States, a 7 percent increase over 2005, and consumers spent $11.1 billion for the privilege, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Baby Boomers’ desire to look and feel younger, and wads of disposable income, are expected to continue fueling demand. Baton Rouge-based American Cosmetic Surgery Network, which offers prospective patients a 20 percent to 50 percent discount on most procedures’ normal cost, is positioning itself to cash in on the trend. With physician fees averaging $3,600 for breast implants, the country’s most popular procedure last year, the discounts can mean significant savings. Earlier this year, parent company United Networks of America signed a deal to allow BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina and BlueChoice HealthPlan of South Carolina to access the discount network.
